Hello, my name is Nina.

At 10, I was diagnosed with scoliosis and wore a back brace for 5 years and started physical therapy the same year. Now, I no longer wear the brace, but continue with physical therapy to strengthen my back. Having scoliosis made an impact on me, which positively affected who I am today. I have also taken an interest in learning more about scoliosis, and am now conducting a survey.

If you have worn or wear a back brace, please complete my survey. It will be very helpful and will contribute to current research on scoliosis, and the results could be used to impact doctors, physical therapists, and families to help them understand scoliosis from a different perspective. The survey is anonymous and only takes five minutes.

I would much appreciate if you could please spare your time to take this survey. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at ncbyskosh@aol.com

Thank you!

Scoliosis Rehab offers these suggestions for minimizing radiation exposure for children who require scoliosis monitoring:

Ask the physician to measure the deviations with a scoliometer before referring to x-ray

Demand lead or metal shields on breast and reproductive organs

Make sure the patient’s back is toward the x-ray beam

Ask the radiology technician to use a filter (sometimes called a wedge)

Have the patient stand at least 6 feet from the machine

Ask the radiology department to use a narrow beam machine

Ask the radiology department to use fast conventional or rare-earth films (because you don’t need highest resolution to calculate cobb angles)

Screening for the condition is non-invasive and takes about 30 seconds. With early detection and proper treatment, people diagnosed with scoliosis can lead healthy, active lives.”
