Providing excellent care for people with scoliosis and kyphosis using Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE)
Our Story
Scoliosis Rehab Inc. was founded by two mothers who unexpectedly found themselves dealing with adolescents with scoliosis. No strong family history, no previous fears - just one day it was discovered and they were thrown into the system.
Beth Janssen has over 20 years of experience as a practicing Physical Therapist and Rhonda Campo has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare and biotech arenas. By the time Rhonda had searched the medical literature for a conservative, non-surgical treatment, Beth was already a Certified Schroth Therapist. Both of their children have been trained in the exercises for scoliosis by Dr. Manuel Rigo, MD from Barcelona, Spain. Learning this method (which is called the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS-Concept by Rigo) and is based on the original work of Katharina Schroth) dramatically improved their children’s ability to accept and individually manage their scoliosis, change the shape of their torso, and improve their vital capacity. They were grateful for the impact that conservative scoliosis treatment has had on their children and families, and wanted to share the non-surgical treatment with adults and adolescents in the U.S.

Beth Janssen, PT Ms. Janssen has been a practicing physical therapist since 1986 when she graduated from the Mayo School of Health Related Sciences in Rochester, MN. She has done advanced studies in the McKenzie approach to treating spinal dysfunction, along with Muscle Energy Techniques and Myofascial Release training. She developed a special interest in scoliosis after her son was diagnosed with scoliosis. Beth traveled to Barcelona, Spain in 2003 to begin studying with Manuel Rigo, M.D. developer of the Rigo System Cheneau Brace, one of the founders of SOSORT, and world-renowned expert and founder of the Barcelona Scoliosis Physiotherapy School (BSPTS-Concept by Rigo) Schroth Based Method of Scoliosis Specific Exercises and has continued as his student. Ms. Janssen received advanced training in Spain with the BSPTS-Concept by Rigo. She is one of the first certified Schroth therapists in the United States. As an instructor with the BSPTS-Concept by Rigo, she has certified Physical Therapists in the method at the beginning (C1) and advanced levels (C2), both nationally and internationally. Ms. Janssen is the co-founder of Scoliosis Rehab Inc. It is one of the first clinics in the U.S. to specialize in the treatment of Idiopathic Scoliosis, with Scoliosis Specific Exercises, using the Schroth-based method as taught by the BSPTS-Concept by Rigo. Scoliosis Rehab Inc. is dedicated to treating adolescents and adults with abnormal spinal curvatures, including scoliosis and sagittal plane problems (hyper/hypokyphosis and lordosis). Nancy Sherratt, PT Nancy graduated from San Diego State University in 1983, and then continued with her education in physical therapy at the Mayo Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota, where she met Beth Janssen. During her nine years in Minnesota, she taught at the Mayo Back Education School, instructed in pre and postnatal classes at the local community hospital and then became supervisor in the physical therapy department at the community hospital. After returning to California in 1993, she worked at various physical therapy departments. In 2010, her youngest daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis. Nancy completed the initial Barcelona Scoliosis Physio-Therapy School (BSPTS-Concept by Rigo) course in February 2011 and started instructing patients in the Schroth based method of scoliosis exercises at a private practice. She continued with the advanced BSPTS-Concept by Rigo training early in 2014.
Nancy has completed intensive training and certification in Pilates. This course included 7 types of exercise apparatuses to include: mat, reformer, Exo chair, springboard, spine corrector, Cadillac, and barrel. She has added some of these to the San Jose clinic incorporating neutral spine core strengthening while applying scoliosis specific principles.
Her focus has been instructing scoliosis and kyphosis patients of all ages. Her years of education, training, and life experiences have come together in helping others with their management of spinal disorders. She has completed Pilates Comprehensive Certification and pursued courses in Postural Restoration Institute, SEAS, pilates for scoliosis and yoga for scoliosis. She is now a lab assistant for the Schroth Barcelona Institute. We are excited to have Nancy join Scoliosis Rehab Inc and expand our facility to California. Julie Altschuler, PT Julie received her bachelor’s degree from Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 1995 and then went on to receive her Master’s in Physical Therapy from Marymount University in Arlington, Va in 2001. She worked in several clinics in the Washington DC area specializing in orthopedics, sports, manual therapy, neuromuscular reeducation and has treated all types of patients from kids to athletes to geriatrics. After living her entire life on the east coast, she relocated with her family to the Bay Area in 2013. Julie has scoliosis, and for years as a child followed the only plan available at that time which was observation only, until she progressed to requiring a brace at age 16. Shortly after her youngest child was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 8, Julie knew she had to do more for her son and pursued the extensive training for the initial course of the Barcelona Scoliosis Physio-Therapy School (BSPTS-Concept by Rigo) in Wisconsin in 2016. She began mastering the concepts and started a program treating scoliosis patients at an orthopedic clinic. She went on to complete the advanced training for BSPTS-Concept by Rigo in early 2020 just before Covid hit. She also has a passion for posture and has created a posture program where she has taught private and group classes on the benefits of optimal posture and how to achieve it. She has completed extensive training in pilates for scoliosis, and loves to combine all her training with the goal of helping patients to create an awareness of their new posture and alignment through position, repetitions, breathing and strengthening. Julie has enjoyed learning from and collaborating with Beth and Nancy over the years and is excited to join SRI! [email protected]
